Sexual and reproductive healthcare and mental health support
【Faculty of Nursing, Osaka Medical and Pharmaceutical University】

1. Sexual and reproductive healthcare
Sexual and reproductive healthcare is covered by first- to fourth-year lectures in the Faculty of Nursing; representative lecture titles and topics are shown below. As well as lectures by faculty members, active learning including student presentations and demonstrations (e.g., how to use condoms or take the pill) is employed to support adolescent students’ healthcare and encourage them to consider these matters personally.
In 2023, we revised and improved the curriculum to include private zones, sexual consent and comprehensive sexuality education in the second-year “Sexuality and Nursing” lecture. This new curriculum began in the 2024 academic year and has received positive feedback from students.

2.Provision of mental health support for students and staff
Responding to student mental health problems is a nationwide challenge in Japan, due in part to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
To address this, the Faculty of Nursing offers students initial support by their assigned tutor and provides detailed instructions in the Student Life Handbook on how to contact the Healthcare Office for advice. For academic staff and clinical instructors in the Faculty of Nursing, faculty development (FD) seminars on student mental health were held in a hybrid format immediately following the practical training liaison committee meeting in June 2022 and 2023; their titles are listed below. At the 2022 seminar, specific advice on early detection and response, as well as signs of mental illness, was provided in relation to: 1) primary prevention (preventing mental health problems before they occur and promoting health), 2) secondary prevention (early detection and appropriate management of mental health problems) and 3) tertiary prevention (support for students experiencing mental health problems). The 2023 seminar introduced the basics of active listening, along with a demonstration of how to interact with students. Both elements received positive feedback from participants, as they could be applied immediately.
